BCG's Hong Kong office formally opened in 1990 and represented BCG's first foray into Asia outside of Japan. BCG found a ready market for its services, with early clients including a prominent Hong Kong trading firm, a major People's Republic of China (PRC)-based company, and the Hong Kong government. The office focuses on a wide variety of industries including financial services, consumer goods, technology, telecommunications, e-commerce, and industrial goods.

The office overlooks the historic Jockey Club Race Course and offers a stunning view of Victoria Harbor. Hong Kong is an energetic city of 8 million people, but it is also very compact, so everything is within easy reach of the office. Most consultants can find comfortable living quarters within 20 to 30 minutes of Times Square.

Known as the "City of Life," Hong Kong bustles 24 hours a day and is one of those rare places where East seamlessly meets West. The city is a strategic gateway into China and will continue to be an important location for BCG as it seeks to serve its clients and help formulate and drive those companies' Greater China plans and strategies.

BCG's Hong Kong office was originally positioned to anchor the firm's consulting activities across the region, though this role has diminished as BCG opened offices across Southeast Asia during the 1990s. Instead, BCG Hong Kong has focused increasingly on the Greater China region together with the Beijing, Shanghai, and Taiwan offices. Given the rapid growth of the area, there is more than enough work for BCG's offices in China.

In the early days of BCG Hong Kong, much of the work focused on developing entry strategies for multinationals moving to enter China and assessments of joint venture opportunities for local companies. That picture has changed dramatically as our clients' challenges have evolved. Current client work offers a much broader, more exciting, mix of challenges, including corporate development, general business strategy, IT strategy, and organizational and operational change.

The office staff, now more than 40 strong, is based in Hong Kong and most speak a mix of Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. While the majority of the office staff comes from the Greater China region, there group also includes consultants from Europe and North America. Building a sense of community and camaraderie is important, so the office sponsors regular unofficial outings, including bimonthly birthday celebrations, Christmas and Chinese New Year dinners, and even paintball and go-cart racing.
