In 1993, The Boston Consulting Group formally opened an office in Monterrey, Mexico's third largest city and a center of both industry and finance. Located in the northeastern state of Nuevo León, Monterrey is home to many of Mexico's largest conglomerates. The city has recently attracted significant foreign investment, as well as many joint ventures involving multinational corporations.
Located in upscale Garza García, the Monterrey office is surrounded by a fine selection of restaurants, shops, and desirable residential neighborhoods. It features a private rooftop courtyard with wrought-iron tables, tropical plants, and shady areas that offer a pleasant setting for lunch, coffee, and, occasionally, project team meetings. The office works hand-in-hand with the BCG Mexico City office, which is within easy reach by a one-hour flight. The two offices are jointly managed, broadening the professional development, project staffing, recruiting, and administration resources available to both offices.
In the early 1990s, the expansion of Mexico's economy and the advent of NAFTA coincided with an expansion of BCG's work with Mexican clients. This provided an opportunity for the team to do more corporate development and strategy work. Since then, BCG Monterrey has grown rapidly and developed a strong client base in the private sector among leading industrial companies, manufacturers, and financial institutions, most of which are based in Mexico.
Along with their client work, BCG Monterrey's consultants work with social-impact clients in health care and education. The office recently completed a strategic and operational review for one of the country's leading private educational institutions. Much of the staff also volunteers in community development activities outside of office work.
