BOSTON—Boston Consulting Group (BCG), one of the world’s leading management consulting firms, signed a strategic partnership with Carbon Direct, a carbon management firm that combines scientific expertise and technology to deliver high-quality carbon reduction, removal, and utilization solutions.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires the removal of between 100 and 1,000 metric gigatons of CO2 in the 21st century. To meet this challenge, global industry has begun purchasing significantly more voluntary carbon credits, which, in turn, finance removal projects.
However, navigating the wide variety of carbon reduction, removal , and utilization solutions is proving difficult for organizations across the public and private sectors. This is a challenge that BCG and Carbon Direct expect will increase as demand continues to grow, outpacing the current supply of high-quality removals.
BCG’s partnership with Carbon Direct brings together BCG’s Center for Climate & Sustainability, which already works with many of the world’s leading organizations on their path to net zero , and Carbon Direct’s science-backed approach to carbon management across their advisory and software offerings. Carbon Direct’s platform enables carbon offsetting at scale and is backed by over 40 of the world’s leading climate scientists with expertise in all areas of carbon management, from carbon footprinting to carbon removal portfolio procurement.
"The climate challenge ahead of us is significant, but many of the solutions needed to address it are already in hand,” said Jonathan Goldberg, CEO of Carbon Direct. “What we need to do now is mobilize these solutions with an eye towards both quality and scale. That is the goal of our partnership with BCG, to chart a path for organizations around the world to meet their net-zero targets and drive real climate impact.”
“Carbon Direct has a critical understanding of carbon reduction, removal, and utilization technologies,” said Hubertus Meinecke, global head of Climate & Sustainability at BCG. “Our partnership brings together climate and sustainability expertise with a scalable carbon purchasing platform to help organizations account for their carbon emissions and, from there, reduce and neutralize them.”
