Deskless workers, who comprise 70-80% of the global workforce, are crucial to industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and logistics. These 2.7 billion workers face unique challenges that are often overlooked in corporate strategies. Despite their essential roles, they frequently lack access to the communication channels and digital tools that could significantly improve their work experience and productivity.
One major issue is the limited access deskless workers have to corporate communication systems like email and intranets. These tools are often designed with desk-based employees in mind, leaving deskless workers to rely on face-to-face interactions for staying informed. This communication gap can lead to a sense of isolation, making these workers feel disconnected from the organization’s broader goals and culture.
Physical demands also pose significant challenges. Many deskless roles involve repetitive tasks or long periods of standing, which can cause physical strain and fatigue. The nature of their work, which often requires quick decision-making and problem-solving without much remote support, can lead to high stress levels and burnout. Studies show that 53% of deskless workers feel burned out, and 43% are actively looking for new jobs, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction with their working conditions. This high turnover disrupts operations and adds significant costs related to recruitment and training.
When companies fail to engage their deskless workers, they face serious business consequences. Organizations with low employee engagement see higher absenteeism, more defective products, and increased safety incidents. Replacing an employee can cost up to 10% of their annual salary, and companies with lower employee satisfaction experience 33% higher turnover and 15% lower productivity. Beyond these immediate costs, a disengaged workforce can harm a company’s reputation, making it harder to attract and retain talent in the long run.
Leveraging Technology for Engagement
Improving the deskless employee experience should be a priority for companies. Enhancing communication is a key step. Giving deskless workers access to mobile-friendly platforms that deliver timely, relevant information can help bridge the communication gap and keep them connected to the organization. Offering career advancement opportunities, skill development, and recognition can also make these workers feel more valued and motivated. Regular feedback mechanisms that allow deskless workers to voice their concerns and contribute ideas are also important for maintaining engagement.
Technology can play a crucial role in streamlining processes and reducing the administrative burdens on deskless workers. For example, enabling them to manage shifts, submit requests, and access training through a single app can greatly improve their daily experience. These digital tools should be user-friendly and tailored to the specific needs of deskless employees, making their tasks easier rather than adding complexity.
Creating a sense of belonging is also vital for retaining deskless workers. This involves ensuring that they have the same level of access to digital resources as their desk-based colleagues, recognizing their contributions through inclusive policies, and encouraging peer-to-peer communication and support. Feeling respected, valued, and heard are key emotional factors that can keep deskless employees engaged and motivated. Companies that address these areas effectively often see higher levels of job satisfaction, reduced attrition, and lower absenteeism.
Ultimately, deskless workers are the backbone of many industries, yet their needs are often overlooked. By focusing on improving their experience through better communication, leveraging technology, and fostering a sense of belonging, companies can enhance both employee satisfaction and business outcomes. Ignoring this vital segment of the workforce can lead to significant costs and lost opportunities, while investing in their well-being can result in a more engaged, productive, and loyal workforce.
