Unlocking Europe’s 8 Trillion€ Deep Tech Opportunity

Michael Brigl Sebastian Heimbach Hien Do Sina Stöhr Max Rachuth

Europe’s deep tech sector holds a vast €8 trillion potential but currently lags behind the US in funding and commercialization. Despite Europe’s strong research output, only a fraction translates into market-ready innovations. By focusing on nine breakthrough technologies, such as AI-driven cybersecurity, solid-state EV batteries, and advanced soil management, Europe can leverage its research excellence to tackle global challenges like climate change and resource scarcity.

To lead in deep tech, European corporates should adopt dual roles: shapers who drive early-stage R&D and amplifiers who scale innovations to market. Collaborations across ecosystems—linking universities, corporates, and startups—will be critical in transforming Europe into a global deep tech leader, securing growth and sustainability.
