Based on insights from BCG’s project expertise and industry experts, this publication outlines the key enablers and challenges shaping the future of healthcare in Switzerland.

Despite its reputation as an innovation leader, Switzerland risks falling behind in healthcare digitalization. Fragmented governance, limited data interoperability, and legacy incentive structures are constraining the system’s ability to innovate and scale digital solutions.

While promising initiatives—such as hybrid insurance models and digital health platforms—are emerging, the healthcare system continues to face structural challenges: siloed responsibilities, workforce shortages, aging infrastructure, and gaps in data integration. Hospitals and emergency services are under increasing pressure, as staffing shortfalls and processes struggle to meet growing care demands. There is considerable untapped potential in strengthening preventive care and fostering collaboration across sectors. Realigning financial incentives to better support prevention and early intervention could help unlock this potential. At the same time, enhancing data integration and harmonizing regulatory frameworks would provide a more supportive environment for innovation, enable secure and efficient data sharing, and improve system-wide transparency.

To address these challenges and build a more resilient healthcare system, Switzerland should focus on the following strategic priorities:
  • Implementing its national digital health strategy with clear governance to accelerate digital transformation and promote innovation at all system levels
  • Realigning incentives and directing investments toward digital literacy, telemedicine, and interprofessional collaboration—strengthening the healthcare workforce
  • Transitioning to a patient-centered, value-based care model that empowers patients, rewards prevention, teamwork, and health outcomes
  • Establishing national data standards and ensuring interoperability, while enabling secure and purposeful health data sharing
  • Balancing strong data protection with smart regulation, to harness the full potential of advanced technologies such as AI
By establishing a shared digital foundation across federal and cantonal levels, Switzerland can strengthen its long-term structural resilience. This will require a deliberate balancing act: preserving local flexibility while driving national coherence through shared infrastructure, governance frameworks, and targeted incentives. The national DigiSanté program, will be a key initiative in this effort.
